101 Lies Taught In Church Every Sunday - Lie #76 You Need An Accountability Partner

  1. Deep waters indeed!

    Good stuff, Steve.

My Church has this same thing and I guess me and my buddy Ronnie were pioneers with it in our Church. We just started hanging out like one day a week and I guess he discussed it with the leadership and then we had something called a "Life transformation partner".

Anyway...We got this paper from our Church urging us to get together and hold each other accountable in things like reading our Bible and daily living I guess. They gave us a sheet of paper to read certain books of the Bible a certain number of times during the week and if we didn't get it all done, we were suppose to start over again or something.

Needless to say, Ronnie and I would hesitate to bring it up to each other because we hadn't been reading. So we confess it to each other then laugh about it and then try to refocus our attention on really doing it next week...And the same thing happened.

I say all this to say that having someone spank your hand when you screw up doesn't work either.

  2. Steve,
I heard author John Eldredge speak at a church 5 years ago, and he referred to accountability groups mockingly as "the sin police." When he said that, I looked around the church, and people had shocked looks on their faces, as that church had everybody doing that.
There was a time when I couldn't stop the habitual sin of drunkenness, and I had multiple accountability partners! It was only when I started to learn the gracewalk, as you teach it, that I was set free from this sin. I no longer struggle with it at all!

Thanks for promoting truth that sets us free . . .
