Legalistic Christian Counseling

I think this is hilarious. It's not totally unlike the approach I took for many years, when my goal was to cause people to stop acting wrong and start acting right. I think "Reverend Bob" is much like the kind of pastoral counselor I was as a legalist. Does this look familiar to you? :)

  1. Wow! Thats so scarily true and funny too. Unfortunately I have been in Pastors offices and have seen this and felt it and you know the counselor is anxious to see you leave.

I can remember years ago when my wife and I had to marry early. One pastor told me that we needed to seperate and come together after we "stop it" for a while and see if we want to get married. I guess he was headed in the right direction but he was watching his watch too and anxious to see us leave and then my wifes pastor told us to hurry up and get the show on the road and get married so my son would not ask to many questions when he got older. All this at the same time that my father had to step down from the ministry because of adultery with the Church secretary. What a mess those days were and so many years ago but God is gracious and my wife and I are still married and love each other and the more I understand grace and the New Covanent the more deeply I see that love God has for His bride in which we are and my how it gives me love to love my wife more than ever before. No where to turn it seemed and everyone seemed disgusted with us on all fronts except a few. I told them I wasn't interested in covering up anything but that we wanted help. The pastor just admonished us to stop it and get married soon and then we could start again and that everybody has problems.

Your understanding of grace and calling me back to rest in grace as well as your book Gracewalk and the radio station has ministered in such a mighty way. There is so much hope for my wife and I in the gracewalk.

  2. LOL. Fifteen years ago, someone told me that she had already "tried Jesus and it didn't work" for her. I'm wondering now if it was actually the gospel of "stop it" that she had tried.
