There is an obsession with sin management in the modern church world that I think may fit under the category of "Idolatry." Some Christians talk and think more about sins than they do Jesus Christ Himself. "But don't we need to focus on overcoming our sins?" some may ask.
The Bible says that Jesus came to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. That's the reality we need to lock in on in life! Sin doesn't intimidate God. He defeated it, once and for all, on the cross. So why should we spend our time making sin the object of our attention? When He took all of our sin into Himself and said “it is finished”, that’s exactly what he meant. Now we are to focus on Jesus Christ, not ourselves, not our sins. We’re to focus on Jesus Christ. The Bible says if you set your mind on the things of the flesh, you will reap the things of the flesh. So if we want to walk in victory over sins, we don’t do that by focusing on the temptation to sin, we focus instead on Jesus.
In Colossians 3, Paul said “If you are risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sits on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
As we focus upon Jesus Christ, we will find that the attraction toward that temptation that has us in its grip, will become weaker and weaker. The Bible says that Jesus Christ is our strength. I think of the old song that I sang growing up as a teenager that said “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of his glory and grace.”
The perfect sacrifice for sin has been given and the Bible says that because of that we can now live without sin-consciousness. (See Hebrews 10:1-2) Now we live with the consciousness of Christ, our Righteousness!
I agree....Thanks for sharing.....I love what Bill Gillham said too....he said to set your mind on something else...like something good....we have been writing on our walls in crayon....we are writing the identity verses.....like I am God's Child, John 1:12, I am a friend of God John 15:15......they help a lot......
ReplyDeleteAmen, Amen!! The entire modern church world needs to hear this again and again!!!
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed that blog Steve! How great the kindness and mercies of our Lord to be the abiding influence in us. His Spirit leads us as sons. Conscious of His Ressurrection I'm more than an overcomer, more than a conqueror through Him Who loves us! God spared not His Son for us; How shall He not freely with Him give us all things! His Righteousness is upon our lips Mt 6:33 and His Agape I John 3:1-3! It's all about Him!
ReplyDeleteAmen Steve! The gospel of God is the revelation of the righteousness of God in Christ the good news Rom 1:16,17 Sinconciousness is a spiritual stronghold in the mind of those who do not understand or believe the gospel.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why we talk about sin so much! Even in grace circles sometimes.
ReplyDeleteYet I thought the only "sin" in the New Covenant was unbelief! Where there is no law there is no sin....
Sin didn't exist in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve lived in union with God. I'm sure it's God's desire to bring us back to Eden (so to speak), living in union with Him and away from that "other" tree (you know the one!), thinking is-this-right-is-this-wrong etc etc.
Surely Jesus died to bring us back to this union? Yet we always say He died for our forgiveness of....that word again....SINS. He did do that, but that's only part of it.
Freedom is.
ReplyDeleteAmen Tashie Right on the mark. He has brought us back to the garden! When it speaks of our rest in Christ this is his finished work. Both the rest of Genesis (before fall) and the rest of Hebrews are a testimony not to God being tried but the Artist finishing His Work and resting and admiring its completeion!
ReplyDeleteI found this blog from a link from a friend and I am so very happy!
ReplyDeleteI find your words hit a chord in my heart. I am reading your posts nodding my head and feeling freedom within my grasp. A soothing balm for a new Christian who is busy focusing on all her sins and how she falls short!!!
Amen Sister - Keep looking into God's mirror and see his glory reflected in you!

ReplyDeleteSteve, I saved this in my " Church Teaching Articles" folder and will refer to it again and again. Sin consciousness is something with which I struggle far too much. I always believed it to be a good thing, something God meant for us until I really started studying it. When I think of how much it's held me back, I feel like the guy in your avatar. It really is self-seeking, isn't it? Thank you so much for this post, and for all of your wonderful writings. You are a true apostle.
What a beautiful way to look at this, sins are forgiven we should focus more on the Lord our God.
ReplyDeleteFor over 30 years I have been kept under sin consciousness. Everything in my Christian walk was exhausting. I kept trying to "work out my salvation" by countering the effects of my consciousness of sin. Sin, guilt, condemnation was my walk. How I went this long I don't know. Only in the past 3 years have I been led out of this by the Lord Himself. When the true revelation of His Word came to me it was then that I began see Jesus for who He really is and what was really done on my behalf. HALLELUIAH!!!!!! I was never able to celebrate what Christ did for me before because I was so focused on how to manage my sins that I completely disregarded His gift to me. Oh Lord may you work your miracle of revelation upon the modern church, especially the western church. Glory be to God for His work. He did it, He did it, He did it!!!!!!!! Halleluiah!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have been free from sin consciousness for a long time until i read a testimony about someone saying that the Lord told them they were on the road to hell because of slothfullness and then they talked about mathew 7 22-23. I know its all by his grace and there is no condemnation in him but im still struggling
