Why I'm Against Religion

Sometimes people are taken aback when they hear me say that I'm against religion. That's the last thing that they'd expect to hear a professing follower of Jesus Christ say, and even more true of a pastor. Why am I against religion? It really a simple answer. It's because of what it is and what it does to people.

Religion began in the garden of Eden when Eve believed the lie that there was something she could do to cause herself to become more like God. The serpent told her that if she ate from the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good & Evil, she would become like God. There was one big problem with that lie. She was already like God. Her Creator had made her in His image.

But, believing the lie she ate the forbidden fruit and her husband soon followed suit. Because this was the first man, the physical AND spiritual DNA of all humanity was inside Adam. So we inherited two serious congenital problems from him. The first was a sin nature and the other was a built in affinity for religion.

People generally don't have a problem believing it's true that the sin issue began in the garden, but they find it hard to believe that religion is a result of the fall. However, it was. The second religious step Adam and Eve took was to make coverings for themselves with leaves so they wouldn't feel ashamed in front of God. Religion still causes feelings of shame and still motivates people to try to do something on their own to make themselves more presentable to God. All over the world today, religions of every kind are nothing less than man's attempt to make himself acceptable to a god he wrongly imagines is judging and looking down on Him.

Remember - it was religious people who harassed and ultimately crucified Jesus. Why? Because He refused to jump through their religious hoops. Jesus Christ isn't religious. Never has been, never will be.

The word "religion" comes from the old Latin word, religare, meaning "to bind up." It points people toward obligations they have toward a deity. So the essence of the word is that it puts people into bondage and causes them to feel condemnation for not measuring up.

The authentic message of the gospel of grace is largely absent in the religious climate of the church world today. The gospel of grace is the proclamation that our God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit have come down to this world, dealt with sin once and for all and have reconciled us back to God. Sin has been dealt with and has been forgiven! That is the truth of the gospel! Our privilege is to proclaim that reality to the world and encourage them to simply believe it so that the objective reality of the finished work of Christ becomes a subjective reality in their own experience.

Religion blinds people to the gospel by causing them to think there's something that God expects from them. There isn't! He has done everything that needed to be done. The only thing left for us is to say "thank you!" in faith and enjoy the eternal ride!

Christ Jesus didn't just set you free from sin. He set you free from religion too. You don't have to perform to score points with your Father. It's all good because of what He has done on your behalf. So, when you see religion - run from it, but be sure you run straight into the arms of your Father who loves and accepts you just the way you are at this very moment.

    Another great blog!
Religion has always told me that my action will cause a reaction with God. However the action of Father, Son and Holy Spirit before the creation of the world has given all humanity an objective reality action in Jesus that we can subjectively submit to in order to enjoy the privileges as children. With God it is not about action and reaction, it is about action. It is done! jg

    Steve,

"The first was a sin nature and the other was a built in affinity for religion." Where do you get this understanding from scripture? Can you show me please?

"So the essence of the word (religion) is that it puts people into bondage and causes them to feel condemnation for not measuring up."

18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son."

We as belivers know that we do not stand condemned. But when we sin, because we do sin, right? Scripture says sin seperates us from God. James 1:14 ~ but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. 15Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. Also in Hebrews "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."
We need the Holy Spirit(that leads us back into God's truth and convicts us of our sin which produces repentence), the Word of God(that cleanses us and brings us near to the father) , and communication with the Father(Because He longs for us to be in right relationship with Him and to bring glory to Him by being all satisfied by Him).

By the way, Religion was made by God! He's the one that called out Israel as His people and gave them His law to obey. We are not a people called out by grace to be a lawless people. I don't believe that reading God's word and praying and haveing quiet times is legalistic, they are necessities. Whichever way you look at them.

  3. Religion is a self-right legalism and it brings angst but real relationship doesn't. Religion's a tightly run ship but bound up in nets no one's able to use and about to hit an iceberg. Religion makes one have a headache and be all bent out of shape. Guilt trip unneeded au jour religion is. Stinkin' thinking's ways of religion is climbing its ladder but it only brings on problems and does not seek the Person of Christ in a true way of intimacy for solutions. It is the very way of screwtape used on his nephew in letters in, "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis. It is bad boy trying out his affinity for religious good. Another winner blog of instruction Steve.

  4. Fantastic Steve! I'm going to share this with my cell group.
The funny thing is, the church can start talking about our responsibility and our obligations to the "lost", and it can sound so right that I get drawn back into it. Praise God for grace preachers such as yourself (and others also).

  6. To Starve Is To Feast (???) -- If you are sincerely interested in my views, I encourage you to read some of my writings to understand my perspective. My first book, Grace Walk, is a good starting place. Truthfully, there is so much misunderstanding in your note that I wouldn't know where to begin in responding in a short space like this. I realize this may sound like a cop-out but I honestly don't have time to start from scratch debating/teaching my views on my blog. I write this as an encouragement to those who already are familiar with my teachings or, at least, to those who are hungry to grow in the message I teach. If the blog doesn't meet your needs, I can respect that. I'm sure there are others that will affirm your views that you might enjoy more.

  7. Steve,

Thank you for this great post! Wow - the gospel is so good! How could I have missed so much for so long? It is so good to know He freed us not only from sin but from religion (law) too!

Thank you so much for your blog and your ministry. Your book Grace Rules was the first book I ever read on grace and it gave a burned out Christian hope and joy! Thank you for proclaiming the truth of grace, the most important message in the world...

  8. Great blog, Steve. I stand in awe of God who moved me away from religion at 20-21 years of age. That was the summer I threw Christian "religion" in the trash can. I told God, "If this (i.e., living up to an impossible standard) is what it means to be a Christian, then I don't want any part of it." It was many many years before I began to discover the real gospel of grace.

Starve, you say that sin "separates us from God," but the verses you quote say nothing about sin separating us. Also, how do you reconcile Rom. 8:38-39 with that? Paul says that nothing (not life or anything in this present life) can separate us from God's love.

  10. Paul in Galations sets forth the grace in the Gospel message clearly that the believer doesn't have any business putting works ahead of faith knowing these sinful desires brought out by the law (religion) and judaizers makes us dead to works and the law and alive to God. Jesus being clearly portrayed to us crucified has not called us to another Gospel where works is ahead of faith. (Trying to legislate holiness makes one want to do the opposite: sinning. Because the strength of sin is the law (religion.)) Verse 2:19 clearly says, "I through the law (religion) am dead to the law that I might live (Zoe not Bios) to God!" Keep preaching grace walk Steve! Amazing blog! Gal. 2:20 in ch. 5 and 6 show us then how to really live!
