Shi Weihan: A Modern Day Apostle Paul

This is the man to whom I dedicated my newest book, "Walking In the Will of God" Let's pray for our Father's intervention in this terribly painful situation for him and his family as well as respond in the ways mentioned below. See my earlier post (June 15) for more details.

Statement of Defense & Christian Testimony Brought in Shi Weihan Trial

Dear Friend of Shi Weihan,

Below is a summary of an English translation of the Statement of Defense made on behalf of Shi Weihan in the case of "Illegal Business Operations" brought against him and six others for printing and distributing bibles and Christian literature free of charge. This is now public information and we ask that you share it with as many people as possible.

Part of this well written defense makes a strong testimony for the value of the Gospel being freely proclaimed in society.

"First of all, in this case, the purpose of the defendant Shi Weihan in printing the Bible and other religious books is to spread the Gospel of Christ and is a conduct based on his own belief. The defendant Shi Weihan is a devout Christian. He began to believe in the Savior of his life, Jesus Christ, back in 1990 and later became a pastor. According to Christian teachings, spreading the Gospel is a great mission Jesus Christ issued after He was resurrected and ascended to heaven. He commands His believers to spread the Gospel to every corner of the earth. Therefore, the believers also regard the spreading of Gospel as their joy. During his missionary work, Shi Weihan found that many Christians lacked materials for true Christianity, and these believers are often harassed and confused by some cults. In order to cultivate the right faith in them and enhance their spiritual level, spreading the Gospel through words is the best way. That’s why Shi Weihan printed the Bibles and other religious books with money donated by other believers. In this way, the believers can enhance their spiritual life through words and understand and practice better Jesus Christ’s teachings so that they love other people as they love themselves, which is beneficial for social stability and harmony."

Other points brought in the Statement of Defense:

* It appeals to the right of Christians to freely practice their faith.
* It appeals to the need for Christians to be able to have sufficient materials to help them protect themselves from cults that are rampant in parts of the poor countryside of China.
* It appeals to the supremacy of the Chinese Constitutional guarantee of Religious Freedom and Freedom of the Press over the Procedural Regulations regarding governmental bodies given the power to deny the right to print and distribute publications deemed undesirable by them.
* It makes clear the impropriety of a criminal charge for "illegal business practices" being applied to an operation where bibles and other materials are given away for free rather than for a motive of profit making.

The original judge found Shi innocent of the charges on two previous occasions. The Public Security Bureau continued to hold him and press for a conviction. The Defense Statement makes it clear that a new judge assigned at the most recent hearing is the same judge who had previously held another Chinese pastor who printed and distributed bibles--Cai Zhouhua--guilty on the same charges as those brought against Shi Weihan.

The lawyer who brought this brilliant defense has since faced the failure of the Chinese government to renew his license to practice law (along with 21 other attorneys who have championed human rights cases in China). Hence, he was unable to be present at Shi Weihan's sentencing. It is interesting to note that the case was delayed beyond the legally specified time alloted by Chinese law. During the delays, the lawyer's license to practice expired and the government failed to renew it, essentially preventing him from continuing Shi's defense.

Now, with just nine days left to mount an appeal, the family is unable to rely on the attorney most familiar with the case. It is hoped that the family will, nonetheless appeal to the court for reasonable treatment in light of the circumstances. Friends and Christians all over the world stand in solidarity with them to appeal to the Chinese government for fair and merciful treatment for Shi and for thousands of other Christians that continue to suffer suppression of free religious expression in China.

Given Shi's well-attested character and good deeds performed on behalf of many poor and disadvantaged citizens of China, it is hoped that the courts will show mercy and allow Shi to be released so that his health (he suffers from diabetes and his family has been refused in their efforts to provide him medicine) can be properly attended and his family can resume a semblance of normality in their daily lives.

  1. I'm praying for him and his family. I don't know how to say this gracefully so but I will try, being as we are christians it follows that we will suffer persecution. Jesus teaches us to be prepared for it (Mat 10:18, Mark 13:9), and lets not forget all of Hebrews 11. Heb 11:27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible. I believe we shouldn't feel sorry for him but rejoicing in that he suffers for Christ, if I've offended anyone please forgive me. We Christians in the United States and the western nations should also be prepared for persecution and all manner of ugliness, and Steve we do need to be reminded of that fact. I leave you with this 1 Peter 4:13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

  2. My view is that we are to rejoice when we suffer for Christ, but I don't find anything that would indicate we are to rejoice that somebody else is suffering. We do rejoice and praise God for his faithfulness in the midst of his suffering, yet at the same time "weep when (he) weeps" right along with him. If we were to ask Shi now about his situation, two things would be true of him. 1. He is rejoicing in the Lord. 2. He wants to be released to his family and friends.

  3. Sometimes we just miss it. Somebody sent me an email this morning that has scrambled my mental eggs. Check out this verse in Philippians 2:
    2:17-18

"But even if my life is to be poured out like a drink offering to complete the sacrifice of your faithful service (that is, if I am to die for you), I will rejoice, and I want to share my joy with all of you. And you should be happy about this and rejoice with me."

That's one I need to think and pray on ... the verse in no way negates our normal response to the pain of people we love, but it does say something about how we perceive it.

    Your thoughts?

  4. Steve, remember that Paul said: "Even after (and this Greek participal could have been rendered: "BECAUSE") I had suffered before, as you know, I was BOLD to proclaim the Gospel unto you in the face of much opposition."

I believe that devil may have instigated Shi's sufferings, but he will be sorry that he had ever messed with him when our friend comes out on the other side of this ordeal with greater influence for the Gospel.

The term "apostle" simply means "sent one". Any believer who obeys the Great Commission and goes forth with the Gospel on his lips can qualify to be called an "apostle". But the title "Apostle" is usually reserved for those who, because of extra-ordinary character tried in extra-ordinary circumstance wields extra-ordinary influence for the Kingdom of God.

It is not the flames themselves that create the value of a vessel forged in it, but rather it is the intrinsic metal thus purified of dross, even if by fire, that is then revealed to be of great value. Interesting that Peter chose to say not just that "our faith" is of greater value than "gold"..but, it is the "trying" of our faith that is of of greater value than the "trying" of gold...

The devil may be the instigator of difficulty and suffering, but, for the one faithful in trials and suffering, it can become the hand of God revealing deeper and stronger character capable of greater influence.

May the devil truly be sorry he messed with the likes of Shi and his precious family!!

  5. They the Philippians should be happy and rejoice at Paul's obedience to the Gospel. Also, not to be happy he suffers alone but that he is a prometheus for them to follow in tweeting the Gospel forward and not to weep for his physical suffering at all as if it was not working a far more eternal weight for the Lord's glory but rejoice and be happy it is doing just that. Good catch Steve. Am I right?

  6. Ray (sharp4china) - Amen! Well said.

David (askseekknock)- sounds good to me :)

We all know that our Father is sovereign and that Satan has already been defeated. We certainly know that Shi's faith glows brightly right now. Rejoicing ABOUT him is easy. Rejoicing WITH him in the midst of his suffering certainly doesn't fit the flow of natural human emotion. So we choose to rejoice in faith.

  7. Guess what it also does? It makes us bold to speak the gospel....Phl 1:14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

  8. Amen Duane, As a Gideon who distributes
Bibles I need Christ in me, upon me, and through me to proclaim Him. To know there is emotional and physical excruciating suffering for Christ going on around the world makes one brave. Praying fervent for my Chinese Brother.

  9. Seems to me to be a bit of a "test" case. All this suffering is turning locks in the Chinese system. Also as Iran shows this week, although Google is censored in China...still the word gets out all around on Twitter,Facebook and blogs. I would like to put this up on my site.
