"You make light of sin," the email somebody sent me recently charged. The person who sent it went on to say, "God does not turn a blind eye to the sins in our lives. We were created for obedience and if we don't do that, He can't use us and will do whatever is necessary to bring us back to the place of obedience."
I've been teaching the message of God grace since 1990 and still can't get over how insulted so many Christians are when told that God's grace is bigger than their sins. I certainly do not make light of sin. What Bible teacher in his right mind would do that? What I do is make much of grace. Make no mistake about it, God's grace has already overwhelmed the sins of our lifetime. The final score is in: Sin: 0 God:Everything
God hates sin for one simple reason. It's because of what sin does to us. He isn't angry with us about our sin, no more than you would be angry with somebody you love who you found out had cancer. The sins of the world are no longer an offense to God because He conquered sin at the cross. He triumphed. Again, sin grieves God because of what it does to us, not Himself.
The primary reason for our existence in this world isn't to be obedient to God, but to know Him intimately. Obedience will naturally flow from that. Without intimacy, authentic obedience isn't possible. At the most, all we can offer is dead, religious conformity.
If we believe that God is angry when we sin, that is an indicator that our perception of our Father is distorted. Your Father is never angry with you anymore. Your very life is His Son "in whom [He] is well pleased." When we understand that God is never angry with us and that He is 100% on our side all the time, that truth becomes a motivator for us to abandon our sins and allow ourselves to be consciously swallowed up by His loving grace. Living in the awareness of that love is what produces obedience.
Thank you so much for this post today. I heard this same message this morning and decided to put my image of the emotional roller coaster God into the grave where it belongs. I am swallowed up by Love Himself and I bury my head in His chest. With you I am so thankful for His 100% commitment to us today and forevermore.

I enjoyed this post. I have to admit...I wrestle with this topic.
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve
ReplyDeleteThis is so positive about who Jesus really is! Just a few thoughts!
Jesus came to forgive the sins of the world (Cosmos) and He did this once for all. Forgiving sin does not allow for us to have a relationship accept from our viewpoint as we try to repay Him in our own economy. It is our adoption, His view in Him and what happened to Him happened to us that has caused new resurrection and ascension life. So I am too consider myself dead to sin and alive to God. God does not live in death or considers sin, whereas I still play with the law of romance, anything that I have made as an idol for myself. It is all the prostitutes that I have set up including trying to be obedient, that cause me to live in darkness and death. HOWEVER, this is not the reality of Jesus and who I am as He continues to be my lover and washes my feet in His obedience, faith, repentance, forgiveness, sanctification, reconciliation, and redemption as He lives His life to the Father in the Spirit. I learn to live loved over time. jg
Great read thanks.

ReplyDeletejmbmommy -we've all wrestled with this at times. If you'll email me and send me your ground adddress, I'll send you a copy of my book A Divine Invitation, as a gift. It will encourage you in this area.
ReplyDeleteHey Kate . . . AMEN! :)
ReplyDeleteSteve, I love how you express deep truth with such clarity and simplicity. Every post you write is a "paradigm shift" for me. I'm so grateful for your ministry! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve! I am glad that you are reminding us all about the never changing truth of God. I'm sure these lies are either perpetuated by the Devil who would love to seperate us from our Father in some way or another and our own opinions & experiences about human behaviour.
ReplyDeleteAs humans we tend to equate God's behaviour to that of other people's behaviour especially if we grew up with parents or other authority figures who rejected us in some way when we were disobedient.
I figure we have to keep reminding ourselves that our heavenly Father out does every other relationship on this earth! He goes far beyond what us humans can do. This just boggles my mind! Kate
Hi Steve,
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I just left a church after 9 years because they were constantly focusing on mortifying our sins. We were to be held accountable to someone else at the church and we were to report our sins to them once a week. We were to always be looking for sin so we could purge ourselves of it. They preached cross centered life but seem to be more interested with putting our sins on the cross instead of allowing Jesus to have completed the work . God lead me to your books Grace Walk and Grace Rules a couple years ago . I have been fighting the battle to get rid of wrong head knowledge and start walking according to the Spirit. Sometimes my flesh starts telling me to run back to the old way or I am going to burn in hell...But I know in my spirit it is wrong! I long to walk in the freedom of God's grace. I just started your study The Grace Walk Experience. As I did lesson two of week one this morning I wept... Please be praying for me to not listen to my flesh any more but to walk in the freedom of the spirit. I praise God for revealing to me that there is an escape from living in the flesh. I hope and pray and trust that God will complete the work He has started in me.... martie
Martie, you can be assured that your Father will finish what He has started in you. The great thing is that it's Him who is doing it and He doesn't half-do anything.
ReplyDeleteI encourage you to saturate yourself with everything you can find that will help renew your mind. I too had to "detox" after beginning to understand this message.
Be encouraged. God is doing a great thing in you that is transforming your life.
God loves me so much, He is responsible for my salvation.
ReplyDeleteJude: 24To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— 25to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.

ReplyDeleteI want to thank you for your ministry. I live in an area where very few churches understand the "true" Gospel. We experience lots of law mixed with grace here causing lots of confusion. I've read Grace Walk, and I constantly reference it when talking to confused, and or new Christians. It has absolutely blessed many people.
I'm amazed at how angry some people get when hearing "the Good News". I guess it just shows how desperate our flesh is to take part in our spirituality.
Thanks again for all your doing.
God Bless!
Frank
Hi Steve,
ReplyDeleteWow, was I glad to read your response, after reading that person's comment!!! eek!!
All it takes is one little suggestion and I am turned around and heading down the path of "law," rather than grace. We are so easily influenced/led by our EMOTIONAL RESPONSES to this stuff!!!
I need CONSTANTLY to renew my mind to the "truth" of God's grace.
Especially because my husband (having retired from 38+ years in law enforcement) is on "law-auto-pilot," and it IS going to take an act of God (literally) to catapult him into the land of grace.
I can hardly make a comment on a portion of text from one of your books without him putting on his battle gear and coming at me. So much so, that I've learned to instead, share my enthusiasm with the Lord or with a girlfriend.
I'm on book 3 of your series and am afraid of what I'm going to do when I get to the end, so I'm reading it verrrrry slowly!!!!!
:) You are such a blessing. If you ever want to see Mount Rushmore, come here to do a teaching class and we will be delighted!!!
Your friend in SD,
PJ Bahr
I AM DYING here, reading your book, "Grace Amazing." Pages 62 and 63 are INSANELY encouraging!!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't stand this. Your teaching is so amazing and so easily understood. I can't stand it. This book is just soooo awesome. I wish EVERY person who is seeking a relationship with Christ could read and comprehend what you've written in your books.
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!!!!!
~PJ (again)

ReplyDeleteThank you for the response. (I think)..... am I missing something?
:) ~pj
steve there is no such thing as eternal security... your article on sin would suggest you support OSAS which is a lie of satan.. Sorry but I cannot agree with your writings.
ReplyDeleteGod Bless, may He open your eyes and heart
Geoff, since your mind is made up about the matter, there's nothing for me to say. We differ on this matter. Blessings to you, my brother.
ReplyDeleteSteve,
ReplyDeleteYour "returning a blessing" is a fine example for the rest of us to follow.
Grace to you (smile),
PJ
